The making of the BEES
The making of the Bees stared by looking at a lot of books and studying what was the difference between the herarchy within the hive.
We strived to make sure that the bees stood up to the detail of the photos we had. It turns out that the abdomens of the 3 different types are shorter and longer and the stings are either serated, straight or not there!
The heads we also totally different with each of the family. Starting with the Drone, He has a very short probiscus and his eyes are larger and further apart, the Worker has feeleres further up her forehead and the Queen has a much longer probiscus and
closer eyes.
This stem is made to support the Queen-Mothers Flower-Throne.
The abdomens, bodies and heads were all cast. The legs,feelers and probiscus's were also cast in plaster but was made with hot-melt vinyl poured in.
The bodies were made with a specially hardened paper-mache mix and was used for all of the Bees body parts. Hair, jewellery, costumes were allmade from various materials.
The 'Queen Mother' was made to sit on her throne. Her throne was made from old drain pipe,cut and bent, which was then coated and textured to look like a large flower stem.
hudreds of holes was drilled and wires were pulled through, to create vine like shoots, dried moss was added and hung to look like fungal growth.
Her throne was made from material textured with burnt and torn material glued on. this was jewelled and glittered and was re-inforced with wire. A cushion was also made for the seat.
